Niladri Lake or Siraj Lake is a wetland (lake) located in Tahirpur, Sunamganj district of Bangladesh, which is known for its natural beauty and biodiversity. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations and is particularly attractive for its natural environment.


Location:

Niladri Lake is located in Tahirpur upazila in the southeastern part of Sunamganj district. It is about 20-25 kilometers from Sunamganj city. Niladri Lake can be reached through Sunamganj Sadar upazila.


History:

This abandoned quarry of the border Takerghat limestone mining project started collecting limestone in 1940. Limestone was collected here and sent to the Assam Bangla Cement Factory built in Chhatak upazila of Sunamganj to meet the necessary demand. In 1960, BCIC authorities conducted a land survey to find limestone in 327 acres of land in the border Takerghat area. Later, in 1966, the mineral stone project was mined for a long time. In 1996, the authorities concerned stopped mining limestone from the quarry, showing this project as a loss-making institution. This lake was named Shaheed Siraj Lake after the brave freedom fighter Sirajul Islam. The graves of some freedom fighters including Sirajul Islam are also preserved next to the lake, and the Shaheed Muktijoddha Siraj Smriti Sangsad has been built.


Natural Features:

The natural features of Niladri Lake are very rich. There are extensive water bodies, winter migratory birds, and rivers, canals and canals. The water level of the lake is mostly upward and it is especially full during the rainy season. In spring, the green scenery of the lake area creates a wonderful picture of nature. There are also a lot of aquatic plants and animals in the lake area.

Niladri Lake is one of the most popular places to travel. Tourists can take a boat trip on the vast lake here, which is a wonderful experience. Especially in winter, you can see various species of migratory birds that add a special dimension to the lake's environment. Also, here you can learn about the lifestyle, agriculture and traditions of the local fishing people.


The best time to visit Niladri Lake is from October to February, because during this time the beauty of the lake is at its best and you can also see migratory birds.


How to reach:

It is possible to reach Niladri Lake from Sunamganj district headquarters by private car or local bus. It can also be reached by rickshaw or CNG-powered auto-rickshaw from Sunamganj on the way to Sylhet or from different places in Sunamganj.

If you want to see Niladri Lake, Jadukata River, Shimul Bagan, Barek Tila in one day, you can take a motorbike reserve from Sunamganj city, visit Barek Tila, Jadukata River, Shimul Bagan, visit Niladri Lake and return to Sunamganj. In this case, motorbike rental will cost 800 to 1200 taka depending on the season and two people can travel on each bike.

Jadukata River: Jadukata River or Jadukata-Rakti River is a border river between Bangladesh and India.


Shimul Garden: A place of natural beauty located in Tahirpur, Sunamganj, which presents a wonderful view of red Shimul flowers in spring. This garden mainly contains Shimul trees, which are covered in flowers in the months of Falgun and Chaitra.


Barek Tila: A high hill covered in greenery has mountains on one side and a river of clear water on the other. When you stand on the hill, clouds and mountains touch your hand. This beautiful land of haor-river-mountains is a notable tourist attraction.


Sylhet Tea Garden: The tea gardens of this region are also an extraordinary tourist attraction. The oldest tea garden in the subcontinent, Malnichara Tea Garden is located in Sylhet. It was established by Lord Hudson in 1854 on an area of ​​1500 acres.
